US Midterm Elections: Trump’s Political Standing on the Line as Voting Begins

Washington: Voting is taking place across the United States on November 3 for the 2026 midterm elections, with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate at stake. Although President Donald Trump is not directly contesting the election, the outcome is being viewed as an important test of his popularity, political influence and the Republican Party’s standing.

The elections are being held amid public concerns over the ongoing conflict with Iran, rising inflation and the administration’s economic policies. Dissatisfaction among sections of the electorate, particularly younger voters, has added to the political challenges facing Republicans. Pre-election surveys have also indicated a competitive contest between the two major parties.

435 House Seats and 35 Senate Seats at Stake

The midterm elections will determine the composition of both chambers of Congress. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are being contested.

In Michigan, Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed is reportedly receiving 53 per cent support, compared with 42 per cent for Republican candidate Mike Rogers, according to figures cited in pre-election polling. If elected, El-Sayed could become the first Muslim senator in US history.

Democrats Eye Majority in House

Pre-election projections cited in the report have placed the Democrats’ chances of securing a House majority at around 90 per cent. The party needs at least 218 seats to control the chamber. Several Senate contests, meanwhile, remain closely contested.

Trump’s approval rating has also emerged as a significant factor in the election campaign. Pre-election figures put his approval rating between 34 and 37 per cent, while 61 per cent of Americans reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with his performance.

Trump Warns Democrats Against Legislative Moves

Trump made an intensive final push to mobilise support for Republican candidates. Addressing an election rally in Kansas, he warned that even if Democrats secured control of Congress, he would use his presidential veto powers to block legislation he opposed.

Describing himself as ‘Mr Veto’, Trump said that after one or two months of repeated vetoes, Democrats would eventually understand the situation and come forward for negotiations and compromise.

Under the US Constitution, the President can veto legislation passed by Congress. However, Congress can override a presidential veto with a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

Election Outcome Could Influence US Foreign Policy

The election results could reshape the balance of power in Washington and influence the administration’s approach to domestic and international issues.

Even if Democrats gain control of one or both chambers, Trump’s executive authority over diplomacy, tariffs and military operations will not automatically disappear. However, greater Democratic representation could strengthen congressional oversight of the administration, increase scrutiny of foreign policy decisions and create additional pressure during budget negotiations.

What Could Trump’s Political Setback Mean for India?

The outcome is also significant for India, particularly in areas such as bilateral trade, defence cooperation and technology partnerships.

Even if Democrats gain a majority in Congress, presidential powers relating to tariffs would remain in place. However, stronger congressional scrutiny could influence discussions surrounding trade policies and economic uncertainty.

For India, maintaining constructive engagement with lawmakers from both Republican and Democratic parties will remain important to ensure continuity in bilateral cooperation.

Why Indian IT Professionals Are Watching the Elections

The election outcome could also have implications for Indian technology professionals working in or seeking employment in the United States, particularly regarding H-1B visa regulations.

Two proposed pieces of legislation concerning the H-1B programme are currently pending.

The first, the H-1B Modernization Act, proposes increasing minimum salary requirements for certain exemptions from mandatory recruitment requirements involving American workers.

The second, the H-1B Visa Fraud Crackdown Act, introduced in October, proposes significantly higher penalties for violations of visa regulations.

A change in congressional composition could influence the legislative debate and the prospects of these proposals.

Could Democrats Challenge Trump’s Immigration Policies?

A Democratic majority in either chamber would not automatically overturn executive orders issued by the Trump administration. However, Democrats could increase scrutiny of immigration enforcement, visa procedures and the processing of green card applications through congressional hearings and legislative initiatives.

The 2026 midterm elections are therefore significant beyond the immediate question of congressional control. Their outcome could influence Trump’s legislative agenda, immigration policy, trade relations and the broader direction of US foreign policy, with potential implications for countries such as India.
